He is a garden designer and multiple gold medal winner at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, and has mesmerised many with his stunning works. But although Japanese gardens can be practically a form of art, don’t feel daunted to create one yourself. Our small Japanese garden ideas will be sure to help you on your way.

Embrace the Power of Space

Japanese gardens, particularly Zen gardens, aim to foster mindfulness and tranquility. The act of raking gravel or tending to plants in the garden can be a meditative practice, promoting mindfulness and a deep connection with nature. The quiet and peaceful ambiance of the garden aids in relaxation and can help reduce stress and anxiety. Another characteristic of Japanese gardens is their focus on the harmony between man-made structures and the natural environment. These gardens often blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape and create a sense of unity between the built and natural elements. For instant impact, planting hostas and ferns are great Japanese garden ideas for your own outdoor space.

By incorporating moss into your Japanese garden, you not only add visual interest but also evoke a sense of tranquility and ancient beauty that has captivated people for centuries. Beyond their visual appeal, Fargesia ‘Nigra’ and ‘Fargesia’ bamboos also contribute to the ecological balance of your garden. As a fast-growing and evergreen plant, they provide valuable shade and create a microclimate that can benefit other plants and wildlife. The rustling sound of the leaves as they sway in the breeze adds an element of auditory delight, enhancing the overall sensory experience of your Japanese garden. By selecting these clumping bamboo varieties, you can enjoy the beauty and serenity of bamboo without the concerns of invasiveness, creating a harmonious and captivating space.

Emphasizing empty space (Ma)

Features

This plant has highly scented, pea-like flowers that are as white as snow. They start blooming in late spring and will create a dramatic floral display in your garden. You’ll only have to allow the moss to take its natural course and cover your garden. If you have a stone pathway in your garden, it will appear more natural when surrounded by moss. The moss bridge will create a sense of calm and age, ideal for your Japanese garden.

It is important to understand the maintenance requirement for your zen garden’s tree and flower so that it remains flourishing inja years to come. One frequently asked question that I received is whether we can setup a Japanese garden in a non-Asian climate. As a matter of facts many countries have already built as part of their urban planning, the zen garden. There is no doubt, though, those countries may not necessary have the tree or flowers originating from Japan but they have selected the appropriate flowers to make it work. Depending on how you like the bridge to be, it could be flat or arched.

Introduce wabi-sabi by arranging plants and other elements in odd numbers. Some withered bamboo in a corner or a carelessly placed rock in an otherwise orderly arrangement can also work. Don’t overdo it, because nature already expresses wabi-sabi in the life cycles of the plants. Evergreen azaleas and other shrubs (and even trees) can be clipped into soft, round, cloud-like shapes, for a soothing scene. This is a traditional approach in many Japanese gardens, and is known as Niwaki.

Focus on foliage over flowers and bring in color to highlight a feature or celebrate the seasons rather than using it for its own sake. Also, creating a water feature brings something really special to the garden, encouraging wildlife and offering the opportunity to introduce new flowers and foliage. Now’s the time to pick the rocks, pebbles, and sand for your garden. You don’t have to follow symmetry—go for different shapes and sizes. Add elements of authentic Japanese gardens to it—a Buddha statue, a stone pagoda, rocks, and bamboo fences.

Spring brings cherry blossoms, azaleas, and wisteria, while summer features colorful hydrangeas and lotus flowers. Autumn showcases vibrant maple leaves and chrysanthemums, and winter highlights the beauty of evergreen trees and delicate frost patterns. Japanese gardens celebrate the abundance and diversity of plants throughout the year.

In summary, the Dwarf Pine brings a sense of elegance, resilience, and symbolism to your Japanese garden. Its compact size, evergreen foliage, and low-maintenance nature make it a versatile choice for small spaces or container gardening. By incorporating the Dwarf Pine, you create a serene and enduring atmosphere, capturing the timeless beauty found in Japanese garden design. Moss holds a revered position in Japanese garden design, adding a touch of lushness, tranquility, and ancient beauty to the landscape.

So, if you’re looking for a way to zen your life, try the Japanese approach! This doesn’t just look amazing, it will also facilitate the growth of natural water plants. These types of plants have a luscious green color and will add an amazing feeling to your garden.

Japanese gardens often have designated areas for hanami, with seating and viewing platforms arranged to provide a perfect view of the cherry blossoms. Japan is known for its breathtaking gardens that are the epitome of natural serenity. As an American, Marc Peter Keane spent the better part of 20 years in Kyoto learning and practicing landscape design. This was no small feat; he was the first foreigner to obtain a working visa as a landscape architect.

How To Do Latte Art A Beginners Guide

Over time, he turned into the "coffee snob" he is today who loves trying out new beans whenever he can. Find him exploring towns and cities for the best baristas to serve him a long black. You will soon discover it takes a little longer to get that layer of delicate and much-needed foam. When both the milk and pitcher are cold, you have more time to do so.

– Avoiding Overheated Milk

The cultural influence of the cortado, stemming from its origins in Spain and Latin America, has played a major role in its global recognition. Coffee enthusiasts who appreciate a strong coffee taste and a balanced flavor have embraced the cortado as their drink of choice. However, despite its growing popularity, the availability of the cortado can still be limited, especially in areas where specialty coffee shops are not prevalent. The combination of flavors and textures in a cortado creates a sensory experience that is both indulgent and refined. It is a coffee drink that invites contemplation and appreciation, offering a moment of tranquility amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The objective is to obtain light foam without compromising on the body. Some steamers heat the milk so fast that you need to remove the milk from the steamer about 10˚F before it reaches the limit to keep it from scalding.

Must-Have Latte Tools & Quality Ingredients

Learning how to make latte designs is easier than ever with the advent of the Internet. Add a little sunshine to your morning with this guide from Latteartguide.com! This design takes basic principles of the tulip and combines it with some cocoa powder and a process called “etching,” which can be done with any fine-point kitchen utensil. The espresso tends to be sweeter when pulled close to 24 seconds. Fifth, shut the steam and remove the thermometer and wand from the milk. It might require a few days of trial and error before you get the settings just the way you like them.

Choose the milk that best suits your taste and step-by-step experiment to see which milk types and methods work best for you. Gently move the pitcher closer to the cup, and tip it with your thumb to slightly speed up the pour. When the cup is filled halfway, gently shake the pitcher back and forth while slowly moving backward.

We've practiced the technique a bit, and now we're here to pass those hard-won skills on to you. While the traditional cortado is a harmonious blend of espresso and steamed milk, there are different ways to sweeten this delightful beverage. One popular variation is the honey bee cortado, which adds vanilla and honey syrups for a unique flavor profile.

Once you're done aerating your milk, give your milk jug a few taps on the counter to break up the bubbles. Whole milk is one of the best types of milk to use due to its high fat content, though you can achieve similar results with oat milk or soy milk. Almond milk and rice milk are on the thin side, but can still be turned into quality espresso art with practice.

Are there any specific coffee bean recommendations for making a delicious cortado?

Whether you’re a home barista or just looking to impress your guests, here are some fundamental tips to help you start practicing latte art. Though machine frothing with a steam wand provides quicker, more consistent results, it requires more skill and investment. It should have a durable portafilter and a powerful steam wand capable of producing rich, creamy froth.

Latte art is a way to prepare a latte where the microfoam forms a design on the surface. It’s a complex process to master because of the specific quality of steamed milk that’s required. Professional baristas can make extremely intricate designs (there are even latte art competitions). The combination of technique and creativity truly takes coffee to another level.

As a coffee lover, there's something incredibly satisfying about admiring a beautifully crafted latte art design on your morning cup of java. If you're interested in learning how to create stunning latte art yourself, this guide will walk you through the necessary steps and techniques. Let's begin by discussing the right equipment you'll need to start your latte art journey. Its simple control panel gives you exactly what you need to make a great latte.

Milk alternatives have become increasingly popular, offering a variety of flavors and textures that can enhance the taste of a latte. One aspect of espresso making that I’ve recently delved into is mastering latte art. It adds a touch of elegance and creativity to each cup, allowing me to showcase my skills and express my passion for coffee. From delicate hearts to intricate rosettas, each design tells a story and enhances the overall coffee experience.

design a latte

Creating latte art with non-dairy milk alternatives can be challenging, but with the right techniques, you can achieve beautiful designs. Here are some tips for achieving perfect foam with alternative milk options. Good steamed milk should be rich with microfoam and mixed evenly–there shouldn’t be separate layers of thick foam and hot milk. Pour the milk about a finger’s width under the spout of the pitcher and submerge the steam wand under the surface of the milk. Turn the steam wand on to introduce air into the milk and begin the steaming process. After a few seconds, further submerge the steam wand so the hot milk and foam can fully combine.

Get creative with plant-based milks, such as almond or oat milk, and vegan-friendly ingredients for a delicious and inclusive treat. The rich flavors of pumpkin, cinnamon, and nutmeg perfectly complement the robust taste of espresso, creating a truly delightful blend of flavors. This unique creation combines the rich flavors of espresso and pumpkin, resulting in a decadent treat that will satisfy any coffee lover’s cravings. The rich and velvety texture of the cheesecake perfectly complements the bold and aromatic espresso, creating a unique and unforgettable taste experience.

The combination of the rich, smooth espresso with the warm, comforting flavors of pumpkin spice is simply irresistible. It’s like a cozy sweater for my taste buds, providing the perfect balance of boldness and sweetness to kickstart my day. Another alternative is to make a cinnamon honey butter or a maple cream, which adds a touch of sweetness and warmth to the muffins. These frosting options are perfect for those seeking a unique twist on pumpkin spice latte alternatives. The science behind barista milk fascinates me as I explore the intricate chemical reactions that occur when it’s steamed and frothed.

The House of the Seven Gables The History List

7 gables house salem

In 1668, merchant and shipowner John Turner I, and his wife Elizabeth Robinson Turner, built a house on Salem Harbor that was destined to become one of America’s most beloved historic homes. Strawbery Banke, much like The Gables, is  a waterfront campus of historic properties, placing it in a high-risk area for impacts of sea level... We can look at all of the terrible history leading up to the trials and hopefully gain some perspective by relating to today’s ongoing divisions. And if the House of the Seven Gables now stands to impart some wisdom in our thinking, then perhaps there’s a happy ending here after all. Hawthorne would often visit Captain Ingersoll’s daughter, Susannah, at the mansion. Here he would make notes of its design, eventually inspiring him to write the now-famous novel The House of the Seven Gables.

The earliest section of the House of the Seven Gables was built in 1668 for Captain John Turner, a wealthy sea captain and merchant who was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1644. Facing south towards Salem Harbor, it was originally a two-room, 2+1⁄2-story house with a projecting front porch and a massive central chimney. Four windows of the original ground-floor room (which became a dining room) remain in the house's side wall. An active captain during the Great Age of Sail, Ingersoll died at sea leaving the property to his daughter Susanna, a cousin of famed author Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Salem Heritage Trail

Throughout history, mankind has shown that the worst often comes out when we let our emotions get the better of us. At one time, society found their flawed thinking to be perfectly rational. Often what isn’t understood – or feared – leads some to act out in the worst ways imaginable. In this case, the Salem Witch Trials and the horror surrounding it; people lived in sheer panic stemming from a few allegations. With a long history of hauntings retold over the years, this once peaceful sanctuary became anything but that with its close relation to the execution of 19 innocent people.

Wild Sea Wellness will be offering monthly yoga classes at The House of the Seven Gables throughout 2024. Be sure to check their website and calendar for details, dates, and links to register. The stairway was tiny, steep and a real struggle for everyone to climb.

If you walk on the Heritage Trail Line towards the middle of town, you’ll come to the Salem Maritime National Historic Site. Before Salem was known mainly for prosecuting supposed witches, it had always been a bustling seaport. This slice of park honors that history with a jetty out to a short lighthouse and a recreated sailing ship.

The area was an enclave for Eastern European immigrants, especially from Poland and Russia. Other communities served by Emmerton’s work included the Irish, Italian, Syrian, and African. After restoring the Turner-Ingersoll mansion, Emmerton continued to focus on saving threatened Salem buildings. She purchased and saved The Hooper-Hathaway House (c. 1682) and moved it to its current location in 1911.
